Final Material Selection for Skeleton
After researching our
options for possible materials we could use to create the skeleton of the dome,
we refined our choices down to timber as costs were a primary concern with this
project to add to its sustainabilty and reducing costs.
Our final decision
was to use 42 x 19 pine which would be fixed with recycled irrigation pipe. The
timber was $1.56 per 1200mm
We were able to
reduce the thickness of the timber used because of the way in which the loading
across the dome works. As there is an even distribution of loading across the
dome, it was not necessary to use a stronger wood. This reduced our costs in
timber from approximately $500 down to less than $100
